We are asking ARCH member councils to complete a short survey to
let us know of plans in their council to celebrate the centenary of
the Addison Act and 100 years of council housing.
Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1919 'Addison Act', which paved the way
for large-scale council housing. The 1919 Housing & Town
Planning Act for the first time made housing a national
responsibility and gave councils the task of developing new housing
for working people.
We believe the centenary of the Act provides an opportunity to
get the government to recommit to deliver the promised new
generation of council housing and to tackle some of the stigma
unfairly attached to social housing by celebrating 100 years of
council housing.
We are working with the National Federation of Almos (NFA) and
together have agreed to work collaboratively with MHCLG to mark the
centenary of the Act and we will be meeting MHCLG officials on the
17 April to firm up plans.
We are also organising a reception to be held in the House of
Commons on 2 July 2019 to mark the centenary and would like to
invite ARCH member councils who are planning local events to help
us celebrate the centenary, make the case for council housing and
raise the positive profile of council housing and its role over the
last 100 years in providing decent affordable housing for low
income households.
Please help us compile details of events to celebrate the
centenary of the Addison Act and 100 years of council housing by
completing a short survey to let us know of any local events to
mark the centenary in your council.
